Pedro Castillo's Biography

Pedro Castillo is a prominent Peruvian teacher, trade union leader, and politician who rose to national and international fame as President of Peru from 2021 to 2022. Born on October 31, 1969, in the rural district of Chota, Cajamarca, Castillo spent much of his early life working on his family's farm and later dedicated himself to education. He earned his degree at César Vallejo University and became a primary school teacher, where he became known for his commitment to rural communities and education reform. Castillo first gained national attention in 2017 as the leader of a major teachers' strike, advocating for better pay and working conditions for educators. His grassroots activism and strong connection to Peru's rural poor propelled him to the forefront of national politics. In 2021, Castillo ran for president as the candidate of the left-wing Free Peru party, winning a tightly contested election and becoming the nation's first president from a peasant background. During his presidency, Castillo focused on social justice, rural development, and education reform. However, his tenure was marred by political instability, allegations of corruption, and an eventual impeachment attempt that led to his removal from office in December 2022. Despite his controversial exit, Castillo remains a symbol of hope and resilience for many Peruvians, particularly those from marginalized communities.
