Willy Brandt's Biography

Willy Brandt, born on December 18, 1913 in Lübeck, Germany, was a towering figure in 20th-century European politics. As a dedicated social democrat, Brandt spent much of his early life in opposition to the Nazi regime, going into exile and changing his name for safety. He returned to Germany after World War II and quickly rose through the political ranks, becoming the Mayor of West Berlin in 1957. His leadership during the Berlin Crisis elevated his international reputation, and in 1969 he became the Chancellor of West Germany.
