Mako's Biography

Mako Iwamatsu, widely known simply as Mako, was a pioneering Japanese-American actor and voice actor celebrated for his influential roles in film, television, and theater. Born in Kobe, Japan, on December 10, 1933, Mako immigrated to the United States, where he became an early champion for Asian-American representation in Hollywood. He was one of the co-founders of the East West Players, the nation's premier Asian American theater company, dedicated to promoting diversity and new talent. Mako earned critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for his role in 'The Sand Pebbles' (1966), marking him as a trailblazer for Asian actors in American cinema. He is also fondly remembered for iconic roles such as Akiro the Wizard in 'Conan the Barbarian' and as the original voice of Uncle Iroh in Nickelodeon's beloved animated series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.'
